Top Science Fiction Books For Kids

By Audra Olson

Science fiction is a great genre of writing to introduce children to at a young age. It can help them to develop their imagination even further, while keeping in line with interesting characters and plot lines. There are many different science fiction books for kids of all ages, so it's easy to get started early. Here is a look at some of the more popular titles of this genre for young children.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery, a French aristocrat who wrote many works, wrote The Little Prince. This particular book happens to officially be France's best book for the twentieth century. It is also France's top translated book, and has been turned into other works suitable for the stage, screen, opera and ballet.

The story is one of a young prince not from Earth. He actually lives on an asteroid. The book is filled with metaphors and lessons, that can be as much of a learning experience for adults as for the children reading the book. Antoine de Saint-Exupery is also responsible for the book's illustrations.

If you are looking for something for children between the ages of 4 and 8 years old, you should try the book Space Guys!, written by Martha Weston. The story is told in rhyme, which makes it both fun and easy to enjoy for kids. The tale tells of a little boy who encounters some robot aliens who land in a tree right outside his home. He spends the night showing them around.

The Rudest Alien On Earth is written by Jane Leslie Conley. In this story, Oluu is an alien who is sent to Earth to learn about its life forms. She can change into any shape she desires, and take on many forms of the animals she meets at the Vermont farm where she ends up. However, she is always getting herself into trouble despite her efforts. The story is one suited for those between the ages of ten and fourteen years.

There are also some great sci-fi book series out there for children who cannot get enough. One such series is the Commander Toad series by Jane Yolen. This series is about a toad leader on a spaceship who guides his crew through different adventures. There are seven books available in total.

Another series is one featuring Danny Dunn, written by Jay Williams. Danny Dunn is the protagonist of the books, playing the character of a mad boy scientist who gets into all sorts of adventures. Started in the 1950s through to the 1970s, the books are reflective of the science-mania of that time. The books introduce some fun and imaginative concepts, such as invisibility, shrinking and the homework machine.

A few of the science fiction books for kids have been made into movies to great acclaim. Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games is one such story, of which the novel has been written for those in elementary school. In this tale, children are forced to battle for their survival like gladiators in order to facilitate the totalitarian regime in which they live.
