The world of "All Things Key Lime." was witnessing a busy weekend. Kermit's pride was due to his participation in 3 different events on a weekend full of fun. The first thing was that Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe was the proud sponsor of Scott Free Racing. Right outside Kermit's front door who won the third place in the 2012 World Championships in spite of ending the day early due to spinning out their boat. Hats off to Stephen and Steve!
Its next destination was Disappearing Island in Ponce Inlet, FL for "Paddle Out Poverty" SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) and kayak races benefiting Entrust which is an organization that trains amateurs to fight poverty in developing countries. The burgers featured Kermit's products which were enjoyed by so many people at the barbecue. The winner at the auction would be extremely satisfied with the tasty reward. Another paddling event is being planned in April by Entrust. So get ready for it!
Last, but certainly not least (or cleanest, by a long shot), Saturday, November 10 was the First Annual Kermit's Key Lime Pie Eating Contest at the Volusia County Fair and Youth Expo, which proved to be an exciting time for participants and spectators alike. The rules were simple... first one to finish the pie wins... and, oh yeah... no hands.
Over 20 years ago, while working as a bookkeeper for Papa's Restaurant in Key West, Kermit Carpenter started selling smoothies from a tiny stand in front of the restaurant. One night the head chef abruptly left and Kermit needed a new enterprise. While discussing his problem with his sister and brother in law, Anita and John, they all agreed that regardless of what they might do, it had to be of the highest quality and have Key West in the name. Gourmet food and key lime fit the bill, and out of this was born Kermit's Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe.
When the Shoppe situated on the corner of Elizabeth and Greene began doing business, the price was reasonable but the site was in close proximity of a sewage pumping station. The brighter side of it was that its position was exactly on the bay in a Key West waterfront area. This area was to be developed in a very impressive way by the Key West city. Kermit along with Anita and John decided that the location could become really prominent if they could manage to carry on in the coming years.
Kermit and Anita drove to Maryland to visit their parents. The drive was long, so they took the opportunity to think of a list of things that would contain Key Lime. This list would prove useful when expanding Kermit's Key Lime product line.
Rewind to 2003, and Kermit's was bursting at the seams. John came onboard as Managing Director after his military career, and due to the economies of shipping to his growing internet customer base and lower manufacturing costs the DeLand production facility and showroom were born. The DeLand location contains a Shoppe, warehouse and production kitchen in 10,000 square feet of space. Best of all, in DeLand they have a superb group of folks who make the business run. For the past couple of years, Kermit has been able to invest in a small core of truly wonderful people. They are now the mainstay of Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe. From the DeLand location, Kermit not only supports his own shoppes, but also ship the website orders and support his wholesale customers.
It was in 2011 when Kermit had the privilege of making a claim on Duval Street, that helped a bigger number of Key West tourists enjoy a mouth-watering chance to try Kermit's product. Now you have more chances to get as close as you want to a slurpy key lime pie on a stick oozing with Belgian chocolate.
