Pointers To Remember In Simple Statue Restoration

By Alicia Hunter

On several occasions, you might be faced with the challenge of statue restoration. While precious materials may require professional touch to bring back its lost glory, there are simple fixes that you can do on your own especially when the damages are just minor dents or scratches. Luckily, the items you will be needing for repairing damaged ceramic and glass items are easy to acquire. There are just a few pointers that you need to remember.

Before attempting to start the repairs, you have to make sure that you have every item you need. This includes safety gloves, adhesives, wooden sticks or pins to apply the adhesives, modeling clay and razor blades among others. Anything that can hold the materials can be used as a bonding agent. For cleaner and better outcome, you may use a clear two-part epoxy glue.

Think about the types of materials that you need to put together. Find out whether you need to hold together ceramics or glass materials in order to determine the best binders to use. The composition of the statues that need to be restored have to be considered as some bonding agents may only be efficient on certain kinds of materials.

Once you have determined the right adhesives to use, you must prepare the area you need to paste together. Clean the pieces carefully as smudges and dirt may prevent them from sticking securely. Always use protective gloves when you work as some of the edges may be too sharp. If you are not cautious, you might hurt and injure yourself in the process.

When applying bonds, you may use a paper clip, a pin tool or a wooden stick. Put just enough amount of adhesives on one of the broken edges. Putting too little bonding material may leave gaps resulting to a weak repair. Putting more than necessary amount may make it difficult to put the pieces together as well.

Heat may be applied to the bonded materials. This can adjust the fit and speed up the curing process. The ideal temperature is about 110 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Swiftly put the pieces together then apply enough pressure to get the right fit. Squeeze out extra glue until you get the right amount you needed.

If you are dealing with multiple breaks, plan its sequence ahead of time. Determine which parts are to be bonded first. Soldering the pieces without a strategical plan of action can be careless and haphazard. You might end up encountering more problems along the way. Complications are more difficult to address without a solid plan in place.

It is the best practice to do a dry run and number the parts according to its sequence. Through this, the succession may go on more easily and strategically. It can also help you determine if there were any missing pieces. This can give you enough time to find any missing pieces. See to it that every part has been fully cured before going on to the next section.

The last process in statue restoration is providing the finishing touches. In most part, this is also the most daunting. You have to carefully select the color and painting to use. It must be similar to the previous one to fully regain its former glory. When things seem to be too much for you to handle, do not think twice about getting expert services. The specialists can fully restore them for you.
