Every Art Collector Should Buy Oil Paintings

By Alan Cleek

First things first: what are oil paintings? Using pigments bounded with a medium of drying oil in painting results to what we now know as oil paintings. The many beautiful works of art that has graced the greatest halls in history to the most modest homes is a result of mixing these pigments altogether. Leonardo Da Vinci created one of the most famous and enduring oil paintings in the world with the Mona Lisa. Pierre Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Raphael, Rembrandt and Vincent Van Gogh are only a few of the many famous artists who have produced remarkable oil paintings.

Many collections by art collectors have gotten their start in the same way, and it is a tip they would most likely give you when you ask them for it: buy oil paintings. You would probably want to own an oil painting which was made by the likes of the artists named earlier. But you have to be one of the wealthiest people in the world in order to have an original Monet or Renoir or something similar in your colletion. Even the reproductions of their work done by other artists do not come cheap.

But you should not let that dampen your interest or enthusiasm. There are a lot of noteworthy oil paintings out there that you can buy. Even small art galleries will display the work of local talents and you can buy oil paintings directly from them. You might actually be supporting the artist and, ten years down the road, when he has already made it big, you will be the proud owner of one of his earliest works.

If you have a little money to burn, you can attend auctions. You can even check out some local art competitions to find out the caliber of the local talent and the relative unknowns.

Many unknown artists get the chance to have their works displayed in many websites that post photos of their oil paintings and use them to convince buyers to purchase them. Online art galleries who aim to bring more original oil paintings from all over the world are now flourishing. With their help, an art lover from the West could easily get an oil painting by an artist from the East with the least amount of fats.

Buying online involves the risk of being given fake paintings or receiving the paintings in bad condition. Buy only from trusted online art galleries and you can do that by doing some research or background check on the website and also finding out what other customers say about them.

Buy oil paintings but do not make your decision based only on the fact that they are the cheapest. You should base your decision on many factors such as the colors, the design, the message, including your passion and eye for art. You will soon develop a keen sense of which oil paintings are worth spending your money on.
