The Various Types Of Medieval Swords

By Marc Hunter

During the Middle Ages when men dressed in armor crossed the lands to do battle with enemies far and near, many of them would carry medieval swords of all kinds to help them conquer other countries and peoples. These weapons were made in different styles and served different functions. Today, a collection would not be complete without having representatives of some of the following designs.

One of the first weapons that these men utilized was the Broadsword weapon. This blade was shaped into two edges that allowed the user to sing it forth and back as he tried to slice his enemy. Anyone within its three foot reach would have to watch how this was swung in every direction to avoid coming in contact with the sharpness.

The people traveling down from the north would be met with the Scimitar that the Saracens like to use to protect themselves. This device has a distinctive edge that bent outward and has become almost synonymous with Arabian warfare. Many fighters would use these as they rode their horses into battle.

The Falchion was a type Medieval Knights used and was similar to the Scimitar of their enemy. This brand was actually mass produced as a single bladed weapon to be used when near the enemy. The blade extended outwards for about forty inches.

One of the swords closely associated with this time period is the Greatsword. This would would have to be held with two hands as a fighter would swing it around and crash it into the body of their foe. The length of the blade could extend almost six feet long and the handle could add another two to three feet to the length.

Many weapons were used to conquer enemies in wars during the Middle Ages. Among the best remembered are the Medieval swords. They can still strike fear in those who gaze upon them in collections throughout the world.
