By Lene Marlin

Humour may be defined as that quality of action, speech or writing, which excites amusement, wit and laughter. Humour is the comic quality - fun, joy, pleasure, entertainment and what is amusing and cheerful - in a person, an experience or idea that makes one laugh. The ability to laugh for oneself and for the world is a tool to survive and to make life more tolerable

Humor is a part of everyone s life. It appeals to all age groups; still there may be difference of acceptance of various kinds of humour among different age groups. For instance cartoons are more appealing to kids whereas satires on the society and its behavior may be appealing to grown up who already has good information on the society and its well being. However most of the varieties of humor is equally enjoyed by people of all sections of the society, irrespective of age, sex or ethnicity.

Humour is actually a complex subject, while cultures develop, language changes and people revise their styles of wit. Humour has social and cultural contexts. It is not always so easy to determine which ingredient makes one laugh. Children and adults do not always appreciate the same humour. Accepting and appreciating humour is also a personal experience and differs from individual to individual. Humour is perceived and accepted within an individual's literary background and personal system of values.

One of the theories about humour is that occurs when the brain recognizes a pattern that surprises it, and that recognition of this sort is rewarded with the experience of the humorous response, an element of which is broadcast as laughter." The theory further identifies the importance of pattern recognition in human evolution: "An ability to recognize patterns instantly and unconsciously has proved a fundamental weapon in the cognitive arsenal of human beings. The humorous reward has encouraged the development of such faculties, leading to the unique perceptual and intellectual abilities of our species.

Humour brings people together in spite of differences. After all there is a saying Humour speaks to children. After all there is a saying "The shortest distance between two people is a smile"., so humor is important in maintaining healthy relations with people.
